We were at a dealership negotiating the price of our new car and it took SO long. Is this typical?

Yes, it's part of the car salesman's secret strategy. He purposely takes a long time in order to wear you out both physically and emotionally. Car salesmen know that, when you're tired and worn out, you're a much less effective negotiator and therefore you end up paying more for your car or truck. Obviously, that's exactly what the salesman wants since he works entirely on commission.
