Special Advice For Women

Female car shoppers often complain that car salesmen don't and won't take them seriously. "Why don't you come back when your husband is with you?" is what many women shoppers hear from car salesmen. The car salesmen who have this demeaning attitude operate on the rather stupid assumption that a woman can't buy a car unless her husband or other male authority figure (her father, boyfriend, uncle) is there with her. And these salesmen hold on to this attitude despite the fact that recent surveys have clearly shown that women now account for at least 50% of all car-buying decisions.

So to help make things easier for you, here are a few tips for dealing with the car salesman:

  • Make it very clear to him that you are in the market to buy a car soon -- and that the final decision is entirely up to you.

  • Always remain friendly and calm -- but strong and focused.

  • If the salesman refuses to treat you fairly, ask to speak to his Sales Manager. If that doesn't help, then you should leave and bring your business elsewhere.
By the way, you can always use this "woman's excuse" as a way of getting away from a pushy salesman you don't like. If you find the salesman constantly pressuring you to buy today, just tell him: "I'm sorry but I can't make the decision without my husband and he's out of town."
